It’s impossible to say that one car part is the most critical, because various parts of your car are important to safety and performance. But among the most important parts are the ones that actually come in contact with the road.
They are, of course, your tires -- and at this time of year, you should pay special attention to them because extreme temperatures and potholes can be tough on tires. A Car Care Council survey reported 16 percent of cars and trucks had tires in need of replacing.
“Each of the seasons places different stresses on a vehicle,” said Robert Sinclair of the Car Care Council. “Winter presents cold conditions and potholes, while summer’s heat is also difficult on tires. We realize that tires are probably the most important safety item on a vehicle and yet the most neglected.”
Check the tread depth of your tires by inserting a penny into the tread. If you can see the top of Old Abe’s head, you need new tires. Driving with nearly treadless tires can be dangerous, especially in wet conditions, where you car could hydroplane.
When replacing tires, remember that one size doesn’t fit all. And just because a tire has the same size as the tire on your original car doesn’t mean that it has the properties that the tire originally designed for your car had.
Proper tire size is just one of many important factors for safety and performance. Your local dealership or tire retailer can help you find the correct replacement tire. By describing how you drive your vehicle, you can help your tire retailer recommend the right tire for your needs. With the right tire, your car will handle better, ride more comfortably and perhaps even deliver better fuel economy.
